"Outrages Beyond All Description" was written as a modern history, according to universally accepted standards of historical scholarship, and the author expressly disclaims any intent to represent the opinions of others, or to relate their historical activities, except as academically inferred from circumstances, documented sources, and their own statements--and the author's experiences that made him a firsthand source of information extraneous to the allegations; further, the impeachment of false witnesses and other participants is solely for the purpose of defense and rebuttal, or occasionally for subtle humor, and should not be used to make any other conclusion about the character of those parties.
Cover photograph is L.D. Hickey, by Sainsbury and Johnson, Salt Lake City, winter 1895-96. He holds the 1856 Book of the Law of the Lord and 1830 Book of Mormon. He was the lifelong friend of Joseph Smith III, who tolerated him remaining a Great Lakes Mormon. Courtesy of Josephine Hickey Barany. Processed image is copyrighted.

Frontispiece. American Express statement, one of the alibi
receipts proving that John Hajicek and his wife were in Greenfield, Wisconsin on 3 March
1992. On that date a book was allegedly stolen 600 miles away in Kansas City. Sara Hallier
Nyman, formerly the RLDS librarian, claimed that she saw Hajicek and his wife at the
scene. Hallier later admitted that she and Ron Romig, the RLDS archivist, were suspicious
of Hajicek only because of his heritage in a smaller church. Prior to the accusation Romig
wrote to Hajicek: "You are more dependent than perhaps you realize upon the good will
of the community of historical repositories." (Signed credit card vouchers and
register receipts accompany the statement to chronicle the times, which span the entire
day. Statements from other credit cards show that the Hajiceks were near Wisconsin for one
week preceding and one week following the date in question. Later that month, the Hajiceks
passed through Independence, Missouri headed south to Dallas and returned through the
Ozarks, as indicated in this non-sequential statement.)
